Alsop students film special assembly for Remembrance Sunday

Students from Alsop High School have led a short act of collective worship in Walton Parish Church. The worship was filmed professionally for distribution to Liverpool schools.

The film will be shown to young people in their classrooms and enable them to commemorate Remembrance Sunday.

During the special assembly, Alsop students recall the tale of the Walton Pals. These were a group of friends, who were members of the Walton Church Young Men’s Bible Study Class. Led by Percy Tucker they joined the Liverpool King’s Regiment. They joined together, fought together and unfortunately died together.

There are two memorials to these local men in Walton Church. The small silver chalice used for midweek communion services is inscribed in memory of Percy Tucker. A brass lectern commemorates the names of thirty members of the Young Men’s Bible Class who had perished during World War One.

Mr Peter Bull, head of religious education at Alsop said: “This year schools are unable to gather formally to commemorate Remembrance Sunday. As a school, we felt it was important to remember those young men from our community who gave their lives to enable us to enjoy the freedoms we have today.”
