Century of school history to be preserved

Almost a century of school history has been handed over to Liverpool Record Office.

The entire archive of Holly Lodge Girls’ College in West Derby, dating back to when the school opened in 1922, was given to the city’s official archive at Central Library.

The rich archive of photos, newsletters and uniforms documents the life of the school and its buildings.
It includes letters from pupils talking about their evacuation during the Second World War and also includes pupils watching the Hitler Youth in a tug of war in 1937.

Headteacher, Julia Tinsley said: “We’re delighted that Liverpool Record Office have agreed to look after our official school archive. It is a fascinating record which documents not just the last 92 years of school life, but also the history of the city and the different social trends of the last century.”

Liverpool Central Library and record office manager, David Stoker, said: “This is a comprehensive collection of school records, and we are pleased to be able to accommodate it at the record office.

“We will provide a safe home for the archive and ensure it is preserved under appropriate conditions, enabling present and future generations to look back and reminisce.”
Holly Lodge is currently being redeveloped as part of the Liverpool Schools Investment Programme.
The new building is scheduled to open in February 2015.
