Local author inspires Liverpool pupils

Children’s author Frank Cottrell Boyce paid to visit to St Margaret’s Academy (SMA) last week and delivered an inspiring speech to pupils.

Best known for co-writing the 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony as well as several episodes of Doctor Who, Frank read extracts from his best-seller, Cosmic, and his new novel, Sputnik.

Year 7 pupils recently read Cosmic as part of their English course, so were delighted to hear more about Frank’s writing process and to receive a signed copy of his brand new novel for the school library.

Reading for pleasure is a key aspect of school life at SMA, with the school being just one of two secondary schools in Liverpool to have recently been awarded the Liverpool Reading Quality Mark.

Sandra Howarth, resources centre manager at SMA, says: “We were delighted to welcome Frank to the school last week. It was a pleasure to hear from such a renowned author about his writing journey and the inspiration behind his latest novel.

“At St Margaret’s we strive to foster a love of reading for pleasure in all pupils and Frank’s visit certainly helped to enhance this ethos.

“He inspired the boys so much that I have already drawn up a list of students wanting to borrow Sputnik from the school library”.
