White coats at the ready! It’s that time of year again when future, medics, dentists and vets receive offers for university places in September.
This year, Winstanley College has a record 35 students receiving offers at a range of prestigious universities across the UK. Twenty-three students have provisional places for medicine, six for dentistry and six have secured offers for veterinary degrees.
The good news is testament to the months of preparation that the students have put into their applications, including taking part in Winstanley’s medics, dentists and vets programme.
The MDV programme incorporates many local professional organisations including Wrightington Wigan and Leigh infirmaries, Wigan and West Lancashire Care Commission Groups, along with Liverpool, Newcastle and Bristol Universities. Students are given the chance to take part in work placements, personal statement writing workshops, UKCAT and BMAT tests, and talks from external speakers on topics such as NHS structure, funding and organisation.
Dave Woods who co-ordinates Winstanley’s MDV programme said: “Congratulations to all the students receiving offers. It has been a pleasure working with them this year; there has been real enthusiasm and willingness to go the extra mile and it has certainly paid off.”
Louise Tipping, principal, said: “To receive an offer to one of these highly competitive degree courses is a real achievement and students should feel very proud of themselves. There’s now just a few more weeks of hard work, during exam season, to ensure they get the grades needed and we wish them the best of luck; exciting times are ahead!”
