Admirable achievements at St Mary’s Catholic College

Sixth form students at St Mary’s Catholic College, Wallasey, returned to the college today to pick up their A-level and BTEC results.

Students were enthusiastic as they arrived to find out their grades because for most, the grades received for their A-levels and BTECs are influential in regards to their next chapter in life.

Unlike the last two cohorts, this year’s sixth form students were able to sit their exam papers back in May after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted earlier in the year.

Today, St Mary’s has seen some excellent results and students can now successfully embark on their chosen pathways.

Students have chosen to pursue a range of different routes including apprenticeships, university places, employment and further education college courses.

The wide range of exciting pathways include apprenticeships with Toyota in Deeside, a dental health nurse in the local community as well as engineering and sales roles.

Students who have applied to university have received offers from institutions across the UK, from the University of Stirling in Scotland to the University of Bristol.

Many have also chosen to stay closer to home with applications to all local universities.

Students’ chosen courses include:

  • Psychology
  • Mental health nursing
  • Songwriting
  • Music production
  • Criminology
  • Sociology
  • Business management
  • History
  • English literature
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Science education with QTS
  • Accounting and finance
  • Game development

St Mary’s also has students who are currently making their way through the application stages for the Armed Forces.

One student has secured a place for Police Constable training, which is exceptional at such a young age in a very competitive role.

St Mary’s head boy, Michael Upton, achieved A* history, an A English and a B in philosophy and ethics.

He is looking forward to studying liberal arts at the University of Leeds.

Mia Casey has achieved double distinctions in her health and social care diploma and a distinction in applied science and will study an Integrated Masters (children’s and mental health nursing) at the University of Chester.

Adam Shannon studied sport, business and ICT, achieving distinctions in all three subjects.

Adam is excited to be following the apprenticeship route in September.

Headteacher, Mr Kevin Maddocks, said: “It has been fantastic to see our Year 13 students opening their results this morning and we are confident these represent fantastic attainment and progress from their sixth form career.

“I am extremely proud of each and every one of them.

“Given the past couple of years, the commitment and drive they have demonstrated throughout the pandemic is highly commendable.”

Mr Maddocks added: “Myself and the rest of St Mary’s wish them all the very best for what comes next.”

St Mary’s Catholic College is part of the Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy Trust alongside St John Plessington Catholic College in Bebington, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Birkenhead, Our Lady of Pity Catholic Primary School in Greasby and St Bernard’s Catholic Primary School in Ellesmere Port.
