Warrington primary school recognised nationally for sparking curiosity in the classroom
Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, Latchford, has secured the prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM). This award recognises the school’s dedication to delivering quality science education to the 144 pupils it serves.
What is the Primary Science Quality Mark?
The University of Hertfordshire runs the PSQM, a nationally recognised accreditation. It celebrates a commitment to developing excellence in science leadership, curriculum design, teaching and learning.
A year of hard work and dedication
Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School earned the quality mark after completing a year-long programme and final review. The school had to demonstrate a clear vision for science though an engaging curriculum. It had to provide hands-on investigative opportunities and promote pupil voice. The school also demonstrated how it showcases science across the school community. To win this award, Our Lady’s evidenced impact on pupil’s learning and attitudes. They also illustrated plans for continued improvement.
Leadership and collaboration drive success
Mr David Gilby, head of school at Our Lady’s, said:
“We are incredibly proud to receive the Primary Science Quality Mark. This achievement reflects the hard work and passion of our staff, particularly our science leader Miss Chloe Pickering, not to mention the enthusiasm our pupils show for the subject.
“At Our Lady’s we recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life and are excited to continue nurturing a love of scientific creativity and curiosity in the classroom.”
Our Lady’s science leader, Miss Chloe Pickering, led the journey to achieving the PSQM. She was supported by HFCMAT’s primary science lead, Mrs Donna Harris.
Positive impact on pupils and staff
The final report celebrated the curriculum design for being engaging, inclusive, and strategically led. Reviewers also noted that the school had made significant strides in science teaching and learning. Strong leadership and collaboration across the school and trust drove this forward.
The report highlighted that Our Lady’s has much to celebrate and enjoy, stating:
“The school community is developing effective practice in providing an inspiring education.
“Children have had access to a range of enrichment experiences […]. Science is very high profile now and everyone at Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School has embraced the changes.”
The PSQM also includes a professional development element. This equips primary science subject leaders with the knowledge, capability and support needed to raise the profile of science across the whole school.
Reflecting on the year-long journey, science leader Miss Chloe Pickering, said:
“Science at Our Lady’s has truly transformed over the past year. PSQM has been challenging at times, but what an incredible journey we have been on to secure this achievement with the invaluable support of Donna Harris.
“I am so grateful for the effort and hard work the teachers have put in to ensure fantastic change and impact on pupil engagement and outcomes in science.”
Helen Sizer, PSQM director, commented:
“By achieving The Primary Science Quality Mark, a school has shown commitment to raising the profile and quality of science education through the development of effective science leadership, visionary curriculum design and excellent teaching practice which is positively impacting on children’s learning across the school.
“Such success is only possible through the collective effort of the whole school community, and all those involved should be incredibly proud of this achievement and the positive difference this is making to children’s learning and understanding of the world around them.”
