£6m Wirral Youth Zone gets go-ahead

Plans for a £6 million Wirral Youth Zone in Birkenhead have been approved by Wirral Council.

Construction of the youth centre, known as the Hive, will begin later this year after the planning application was approved.

The centre will offer a range of activities for young people aged eight to 19, and up to 25 for those with a disability. Activities will include dance, sport, music and media.

The aim of the youth centre is to provide a safe environment where young people can come and enjoy themselves and will raise aspirations and confidence.

It will be run by the independent charity On Side, while Wirral Council will work as a strategic partner and significant funder on the project. It is expected to open at the end of 2016.

Wirral Council leader Phil Davies says: “As a major funder of the project, Wirral Council is thrilled the Youth Zone is moving forward.

“The opportunities it will offer young people from sports to media, arts and preparing for work are hugely exciting.

“Not only will it offer a safe and inspiring place for young people to meet, the Youth Zone will play an important part in helping deliver our 2020 pledges to raise young people’s aspirations, provide jobs, and help them achieve their true potential.

“The project will benefit the whole borough and we look forward to seeing it take shape.”
