Primary school pupils take centre stage at science and sustainability fair

St Alban’s Catholic Primary School, Wallasey, recently celebrated the curiosity, creativity and environmental awareness of its pupils at an inspiring science fair, which brought together families, staff, governors and members of the wider school community for a day of discovery.

‘Science for a Sustainable Future’ was the theme of this year’s fair, which took place in the school hall and saw Year 6 pupils showcase the work they have completed throughout the year exploring how science can help create a more sustainable world.

In groups of four or five, the young scientists exhibited a range of experiments that investigated topics such as evolution and inheritance, electricity and light, and living things and their habitats, engaging visitors and encouraging discussions on the importance of sustainability.

Emily, a pupil in Year 6, said:

“Science is important because it happens everywhere you look. I really enjoyed showing my work to my family.”

Classmate, Lola, added:

“It is important to know about science because it’s how the world works.”

The fair opened with visits from pupils in Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2, who enjoyed exploring the work of Year 6 pupils. Families and the wider community were then welcomed in the afternoon to learn about the projects and celebrate pupils’ achievements.

Visitors commented on pupils’ impressive creativity, vibrant enthusiasm, and the pride and excitement they displayed when demonstrating their experiments. The innovative stall designs also gained lots of positive praise, with pupils having taken great care to make their stalls both informative and inviting.

Mrs Aine Hayes, Year 6 class teacher and fair organiser, said:

“Our ‘Science for a Sustainable Future’ fair was an amazing opportunity to showcase the children’s work. They have worked incredibly hard over the past year to develop their knowledge and scientific skills, culminating in a fantastic event which demonstrated their commitment to finding solutions for a more sustainable future.

“I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Donna Harris, Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy’s primary science lead, for her incredible support both in the lead up and during the fair.”

Ms Donna Harris, added:

“I am incredibly proud of the Year 6 pupils at St Alban’s who did brilliant job showcasing their learning in science. They confidently led hands-on activities that engaged both their peers and families. The fantastic turnout and positive feedback from parents are a direct testament to the dedication and hard work of Mrs Hayes and Mr Maguire who planned a truly impactful afternoon.”

Headteacher of St Alban’s Catholic Primary School, Mr John McDonald, commented:

“We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and dedication our Year 6 pupils have demonstrated in the lead up to the science fair, which was a wonderful celebration of their learning. Well done, Year 6!”

St Alban’s Catholic Primary School is a proud member of the Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy Trust (HFCMAT), which comprises nine schools, including two secondary and seven primary, across Wirral and Cheshire.

Mr Andy Moor, CEO of HFCMAT, said:

“Sustainability and caring for our common home is a key priority at Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy Trust, and the St Alban’s science fair was a wonderful example of this in action, reflecting our responsibility as stewards of the world. Congratulations to the Year 6 pupils of St Alban’s Catholic Primary School and to Mrs Hayes and Mr Maguire for organising an excellent fair!”
