Alsop High School reflect on the meaning of community

At Alsop High School, students have participated in the ‘My Community Matters’ forum, where they listened to and reflected on the song ‘Heart as Big as Liverpool’.
The song, first released in 1998 by Alsop alumni Peter Wylie and the Mighty Wah, is a love song to Liverpool, showing a true sense of pride and patriotism for the city.
On Valentine’s Day, students considered the wider concept of what love means. They reflected on the things they love about school.
Students also shared things they would like to change within school and their community. During the session, students were reminded of the quote from Mahatma Gandhi “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.
The feedback from students on what they love about Alsop showcased how they appreciate the ‘community feel’ and inclusivity.
Comments included: “The opportunities we have to pursue our interests”, “Good teachers and talented students”, The community aspect of the school”, “The school is inclusive”.
One comment even referred to a love for the curriculum.
When asked what they would love to change at Alsop, some students noted how they would like to see ‘even more opportunities to explore their hearts and interests’.
While others shared how they would love more outside learning experiences and access to creative projects.
As part of the forum, students were also tasked with sharing what they love about living in Liverpool. The comments showcased a sense of pride among students.
One student shared “I love Liverpool the way it is.”
While another, added: “Liverpool is a multi-cultural and unique city.”
“We have a beautiful city with so much to do and see,” one student commented.
In addition, students shared their ideas for making Liverpool a better place. This included creating safer places with less crime and more opportunities for people after school, during weekends and holidays.
The session culminated with an arts and crafts session facilitated by Ms Creaby. Students explored their creative talents by making cards to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
