Edge Hill expert examines Liverpool’s Child Friendly City ambition

In recognition of World Children’s Day on 20 November, Professor Carol Robinson from Edge Hill University will host a special conference to share leading research on children’s health and wellbeing.

The event forms part of the ongoing project by Liverpool City Council (LCC) to turn Liverpool into a UNICEF Child Friendly City. The conference entitled ‘Adopting a Child Friendly City approach in practice’ and will be held on Friday 19 November, 10am-1pm with professionals, researchers and anyone working with children and young people invited to attend.

Speakers include researchers from Edge Hill, Liverpool Hope and Liverpool John Moores universities; they will give presentations about their research and the potential for the research to support LCC’s endeavour to achieve Child Friendly City status.

Professor of children’s rights Carol Robinson said: “The overarching aim of UNICEF’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative is to foster child rights at the local level to improve the daily lives of children and young people in the cities and communities where they live.”

“Liverpool City Council wants the experiences of all children across Liverpool to be underpinned by dignity, equality, safety and participation. It aims for children to feel safe, valued, to be healthy and be informed. My colleagues and I have been supporting this ambition by sharing our research and knowledge, showing how giving children an understanding of their basic rights can seriously improve outcomes for them.”

Professor of child health literacy Lucy Bray will be speaking at the event, Lucy said: “My colleagues and I have been working with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities and their families as part of a National Institute of Health Research study.

“We will be giving a talk all about how we are co-developing child-centred priorities for these children in response to the COVID -19 pandemic, ideas that can be put into practice in a range of settings.”

The event will provide the opportunity to present, listen to and discuss current research aimed at improving the health, wellbeing and experiences of children across the city. It will start with contributions from UNICEF and members of the team at LCC who are leading the Child Friendly City Initiative across Liverpool.

The City Council has committed to ensuring that children’s voices, needs and rights are integrated into all the services it provides. It places the same requirement on those it works with, including teachers, health care professionals, police and social workers as well as businesses, transport and higher education institutions.

The event is aimed at all LCC partners and other professionals and researchers, at all stages of their careers, with an interest in the Child Friendly City Initiative and improving the life chances of young people.
