Liverpool secondary school sports stars shine in athletics competition

Over 850 secondary school students have competed in Liverpool School Sports Partnership’s (LSSP) annual secondary athletics competition.

22 Liverpool-based secondary schools descended upon Wavertree Athletics Centre to compete in a variety of events. From track races including sprint, relay and distance races, to field events such as high jump, shotput and javelin.

Taking place across two days, LSSP organised and hosted the competition that saw an incredible array of performances. The not-for-profit organisation works in partnership with school to enhance and develop PE, physical activity and sports,

Teacher of PE at St John Bosco Arts College in Croxteth, Miss Michelle Hinnigan, said: “This was an unforgettable day for all students who took part. The sportsmanship across all year groups was evident to see and makes it one of the best sporting events of the year. A highlight for us as a school was seeing the smiles on the students’ faces and the positive engagement they had with other schools.

“It was a great competition for all students who took part and an amazing opportunity for students to compete against the best of the best in Liverpool no matter their ability. We’re looking forward to next year’s already!”

As with all athletics competitions, the 100-metre sprint was one of the highlights on both days of the competition. It saw crowds on the edge of their seats to see who would get over the line first.

St Edward’s College in Liverpool took home gold in both the Year 10 boys’ and girls’ 100-metre races. One student ran the 100-metre distance in 11.25 seconds and another student sprinted to the finish line in 12.44 seconds.

Joint CEO of LSSP, Adella Dando, said: “We had an incredible two days at this year’s LSSP secondary athletics competition. It was fantastic to see the passion and dedication of our young Liverpool sports stars.

“Beyond the brilliant individual and team performances, what truly stood out on the day was the incredible teamwork and sportsmanship on display. It served as a positive reminder that while winning is amazing, the real victory lies in taking part and supporting one another.

“We’d like to thank the schools that came out to compete and look forward to hosting the event next July!”
