Maghull High School receives prestigious Geography Quality Mark

Maghull High School has been awarded a Quality Mark by the Geographical Association for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

The award celebrates new and innovative approaches to teaching geography, and also looks at how well students do and how well they are taught.

The school was one of just 30 schools from across the UK to receive the award.

Graham Donnan, head of geography, said “As a geography department we are delighted that the dedication and hard work put in by staff and pupils alike is recognised through the achievement of this award”

Matthew Kay, headteacher, said: “I am extremely proud that the work and commitment demonstrated by our geography department has been recognised. This award is a testament to Mr Donnan and his team’s relentless drive to inspire and enthuse students through an engaging and exciting curriculum offer. This award is very well deserved and is a reflection of the hard work of our staff and students at Maghull High School.”

Alan Kinder, chief executive of the Geographical Association (GA), said: “There has never been a more important time for all children and young people to study geography. Growing up in the 21st century means living in an increasingly interconnected world, one facing a growing number of global challenges such as climate change and the need to live our lives sustainably.

“Geography not only fascinates and inspires young people, it provides them with the knowledge and understanding they need to live in the modern world. Geography is, as we say in the GA’s manifesto, ‘fundamental to everyone’ and I am delighted that a growing number of schools are teaching their students to fully engage with the subject.”

The Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) award was given this month, and all winners will be invited to attend a presentation to be held in London this coming November.
