National Children’s Orchestras open annual auditions for 2027

National Children’s Orchestras (NCO) have opened up its auditions for 2027. It invites young musicians across the UK to take their next step in music.

Who can apply?

The annual opportunity is open to children aged eight to 13 who play an orchestral instrument. It offers a chance to join one of the UK’s most inspiring youth music organisations which brings together young players from across the country to experience the joy, challenge and community of orchestral music.

Whether picking up an instrument for the first time in an ensemble setting or building on existing experience, NCO’s programmes are designed to nurture musical skills and confidence in equal measure. Those selected will take part in residential Orchestral Weeks. Or, they will participate in regional non-residential Orchestral Weekends in the North West, in the Midlands, in the South West or in London.

Training, opportunities and inclusive action

Musicians who continue on past the audition stage will be placed in one of eight orchestras. They will work with leading tutors, conductors and guest artists. For example, just last month, Anna Lapwood joined NCO.

Auditions are free and accessible. It requires a simple video submission, with no specialist equipment needed. Alongside in-person activity, participants also gain access to online resources and creative opportunities supporting both musical and personal development. 

Crucially, NCO is committed to ensuring that children with potential can take part regardless of financial circumstances. Financial support is available, and the organisation actively encourages applications from children currently under-represented in classical music.

Building confidence through music

Each year, thousands of children engage with NCO’s work. They discover not just musical skills but also confidence, teamwork and creativity that extend far beyond the rehearsal room.

All young musicians, whether new to NCO or returning, audition afresh each year. This reinforces the organisation’s open, inclusive approach. NCO welcome all new young musicians from across the UK.
