Rainford High named National Champions for a second time

Rainford High’s Year 8 rugby league team has made school sporting history. They have been crowned National Champions for the second consecutive year, completing a remarkable treble-winning season.

The team secured the prestigious Champion Schools title with a 30-4 victory over Hull’s Sirius Academy West in the national final. The win capped off an unforgettable season which saw the players lift all three major rugby league trophies available to them.

Rainford High had already claimed the St Helens Cup and the North West Counties Championship this year, meaning this national victory completed a stunning clean sweep for the team. It confirmed the squad’s place among the most successful teams in the school’s recent sporting history.

The final was a competitive match with Sirius Academy West showing great determination. The opposition produced strong spells towards the end of the first half and the beginning of the second. It tested Rainford’s defence and demonstrated why they had reached the national stage.

Rainford High, however, once again showed the discipline, resilience and teamwork that have defined the season. Strong defence, relentless teamwork and clinical finishing ensured they remained in control throughout the contest. Every player contributed to an exceptional team performance.

Reuben Lawrenson was the standout performer on the day, receiving the player of the match award. Reuben led from the front with powerful carries, excellent defensive work and outstanding composure under pressure. He inspired his teammates throughout the final.

Reuben said:

“It’s been an incredible experience winning the National Championship for the second year running. It’s been a great experience for me and the whole team.”

Mr Andrew Skerry, Year 8 learning leader at Rainford High and teacher of PE, said:

“Winning the Champion Schools title for a second consecutive year is an outstanding achievement in itself, but combining it with victories in the St Helens Cup and North West Championship makes this a truly exceptional year for Rainford High rugby league.

“The team’s achievements are even more remarkable considering they also secured the Lancashire Rugby Union title, meaning the squad has claimed four trophies in one year while remaining undefeated throughout the season!”
