Brook Lodge Primary School honours the legacy of beloved chair of governors
Rainford Brook Lodge Primary School, a proud member of the Everyone Matters Schools Trust, has paid tribute to its late chair of governors by naming a new learning area in her memory.
The school recently unveiled ‘The Learning Lodge’ – a dedicated learning space named in honour of Fiona Ballad.
Sadly, Fiona passed away in 2024 after a short illness. She began her journey at Brook Lodge as a parent and was committed to supporting children with special educational needs. Her unwavering dedication soon led her to join the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), where she was instrumental in raising thousands of pounds to support school projects.
She later served as a school governor and, ultimately, as chair of governors, helping to guide the school through its transition to join the Everyone Matters Schools Trust.
Formerly the school’s smallest classroom, the newly refurbished Learning Lodge has been transformed into a flexible space designed for small group work, phonics lessons, intervention support and extra-curricular activities. The project was funded by the Everyone Matters Schools Trust, a vision Fiona had passionately championed during her time on the governing body.
Fiona’s family said: “After a really challenging year, we are so pleased that Fiona’s dedication and commitment to the school has been recognised. The Learning Lodge is a fitting tribute to Fiona’s hopes for the school’s future.”
Headteacher of Brook Lodge Primary School, Mr Phil Reece, said: “It was lovely for staff to catch up with Fiona’s family and a privilege to honour her legacy in this way. Fiona’s contributions to the school have made a lasting difference, and we’re proud to have a space that reflects her commitment to children’s learning.”
Fiona’s family attended the heartfelt naming ceremony and funded the new sign for The Learning Lodge as a tribute to her dedication. Her three sons, all former pupils at Brook Lodge, are now thriving at Rainford High.
Mr Ian Young, CEO of Everyone Matters Schools Trust and principal of Rainford High, added: “Fiona was a remarkable individual whose dedication to Brook Lodge and its pupils truly embodied the values of our trust. It’s a privilege to see her legacy honoured in such a meaningful way, and we’re proud to have supported the creation of a space that will continue to nurture and inspire children for years to come.”
