Meet the North West’s record-breaking hopefuls
In the build‑up to the 2026 TCS London Marathon, runners from across the North West are preparing to take on an extraordinary mix of Guinness World Records attempts, combining bold costumes, heartfelt fundraising, and inspiring personal stories.
From cheerleader outfits to grassroots football kits, and even a three‑person team tied together, these runners are using creativity and determination to shine a light on causes close to their hearts.
George Carley – Manchester
Record title: Fastest marathon dressed as a cheerleader
Manchester’s George Carley is hoping to catch the eyes, and hearts, of spectators as he runs the marathon in full cheerleader attire. Beyond the humour and visual spectacle, George is using this bold challenge to raise funds for YMCA Doncaster. This charity supports young people with housing, wellbeing, and community services.
George hopes the costume will bring joy to the day while drawing attention to a serious issue. He will use the platform of the marathon to spark conversations and drive donations.
Harriet Lucero – Salford
Record title: Fastest marathon dressed in a football kit (female)
Salford doctor, Harriet Lucero, is uniting the two biggest parts of her life, medicine and family. She takes on the TCS London Marathon in her son’s Winton Wanderers football kit.
Harriet is raising money for both the grassroots football club and Mind in Salford, a charity supporting mental health across the region. She describes running as a vital outlet, giving her the headspace she needs in such a demanding career.
Helen Caldwell – Liverpool
Record title: Fastest four‑legged marathon (female team)
As part of the Marie Curie trio, Liverpool’s Helen Caldwell will be running the marathon physically tied to two teammates.
Inspired by her long career in nursing, Helen is running to raise funds for Marie Curie. This charity provides essential support for patients and families facing terminal illness.
The trio’s attempt is not only a test of endurance but also of teamwork, trust and coordination. A fitting reflection of the values at the heart of Marie Curie’s care.
A celebration of creativity, community, and cause
Every year, the TCS London Marathon brings out runners with extraordinary motivations. This year’s North West entrants demonstrate the power of combining personal passion with public fundraising.
Whether it’s a costume that sparks conversation, a kit that represents a family’s weekend rituals, or a team effort symbolising compassion in healthcare, each Guinness World Records attempt highlights the deeply human stories behind the marathon’s miles.
As race day approaches, these runners continue to train, prepare, and fundraise, proving that taking on a marathon is about far more than crossing the finish line.
