Alsop remembers

This year students at Alsop High School have created beautiful poppy dresses to commemorate Remembrance Sunday. These are to be displayed as the school gathers to pay its respects to those who have died during war and conflict.

Ms Sarah Shardlow, teacher of fashion and textiles at Alsop said: “This year we wanted to do something different to engage our students as we begin to remember the fallen. We are delighted that our students have created such stunning dresses.”

Year 12 fashion and Year 8 textiles students created the beautiful poppy dresses. The Year 8 students worked hard to produce individual felt poppies, which were then layered on to the train of a poppy dress. The Year 12’s put their creative skills into producing a striking strapless dress with 3D poppies.

Headteacher Mr Paul Masher, said: “These dresses provide a visual focus for collective worship. They remind students of why the poppy became the symbol of remembrance. We are pleased that our students are able to get back into the workshops and engage in practical lessons. These students have worked so hard to produce these stunning outcomes. Well done to all those who contributed.”

Alsop High School students have also created a film for classroom based collective worship to enable young people to commemorate Armistice Day and is online for schools to use.

Students in the film and the Rev Fiona Pennie, Interim Priest, at Walton Parish Church, lead a special assembly were Alsop students recall the tale of the Walton Pals. These were a group of friends, who were members of the Walton Church Young Men’s Bible Study Class.

During World War One, led by Percy Tucker, they joined the Liverpool King’s Regiment. They all joined up together and went off to fight on the Western Front in France. They fought together during the Battle of the Somme and unfortunately, they died together. The name of Percy J Tucker appears on the Thiepval Memorial in France.

Mr Peter Bull, head of RE said: “This film is so poignant and moving. Our students have achieved something wonderful to be shared with schools across Liverpool and beyond. We hope  it is useful for staff in other schools as they prepare to teach about Remembrance Sunday.”

Mr Paul Smalley, senior lecturer at Edge Hill University said: “Do take a look at this fantastic resource created by Alsop High School as an act of collective worship for Remembrance Sunday. I hope that schools will make use of it. Well done to Alsop and all the students involved in it”
