Famous names celebrate St Margaret’s success

A Liverpool school celebrated its football trophy in style as famous names sent special messages of support and congratulations.

Gary Lineker, Mark Chapman, Jake Humprey and Geoff Shreeves are just some of the famous pundits who presented St Margaret’s CE Academy’s First XI under 18 football team with special video messages.

The messages were to congratulate the under 18 side who successfully lifted the Merseyside Colleges League NDS Trophies Championship.

Throughout the season, the team scored 139 goals, thanks to some stand-out performances. Pupil Ben Hitchman scored 48 goals and seven hat tricks, Michael Taylor and Matthew Tefler proved invaluable by ranking up over 50 assists between them, while Captain Alex Yates was a superb leader throughout the campaign.

During the season, over 30 players participated in games for the First XI and each of them made a huge contribution to such a special season.

Secretary of the club, Greg McLean, and manager of the First XI team spoke of his pride at seeing his side do so well, “As a former student of the school myself, it has been a very special year to be involved with the First XI.

“To lift the league title in my first season as manager is something I could only have dreamed of back in September. But full credit has to go to the players who have shown tremendous commitment and dedication both on and off the pitch to the school, their team-mates and to me as their manager. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of players.”

Overseeing the plans for the end of season awards celebrations, Greg wrote to a number of high profile organisations, not expecting the support he received.

On the awards night, renowned faces and voices in football from leading networks including Sky Sports, BBC Match of the Day and Radio City sent their congratulations to the winning team, which made the night even more special.
