Ofsted delight for Eldon Primary School after Outstanding grade

A Preston primary school has secured an ‘Outstanding’ grade after its recent Ofsted inspection.

Eldon Primary School in Preston received Outstanding in all areas during the inspection in September.

The just released report praises Eldon’s “rapid pace of improvement”, quality of teaching and effective leadership from headteacher Azra Butt, senior leaders and governors.

Among its key findings, it states: “Leaders have a clear and strong vision which enables them to provide the best possible education for all pupils, and which all members of staff fully embrace.

“Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is exceptionally strong. Pupils develop a deep understanding of difference and diversity in modern society.

“The quality of teaching has continued to improve since the previous inspection and is now outstanding. Recent improvements to the teaching of mathematics have been particularly effective.”

The Outstanding Ofsted grade follows Eldon’s shortlist success at this year’s Educate Awards.

The school is shortlisted for two awards this year, Most Inspirational Primary School and the Outstanding Teaching of Life Skills Award.

The school has transformed itself in to a thriving place for children, parents, staff and governors. Continuously seeking innovative ways to inspire its children, the past year has seen the instillation of a radio station, 4D immersive room and the creation of ‘Eldon House’, a unique space used to enrich the curriculum and develop children’s personal skills.

It’s ‘Eldon House’ initiative is nominated in the Outstanding Teaching of Life Skills category. When a house came up for sale next door to the school, headteacher Azra had an idea: to create ‘Eldon House’, a place to enhance life skills and help vulnerable families receive the support they needed.

From comparing carpet prices, budgeting meals to discussing potential hazards around the home, Eldon House has put life skills in to a ‘real-life’ context for children. Eldon House is also a valuable resource for families, with adult learning courses proving popular to develop the life chances of parents and their children.

The winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony, which takes place on Friday 17 November at Liverpool Cathedral.
