St Mary’s College celebrates excellent A-level results

Students and staff at St Mary’s College in Crosby are celebrating another excellent set of A-level results this year.

Candidates recorded a 99 per cent pass rate in the key examinations this summer – up from 98 per cent in 2016 – with more than a third of students (34 per cent) achieving three or more A*, A or B grades.

In total more than half of all passes (52 per cent) were at the highest A*, A or B grades.

Top of the class at St Mary’s this summer were straight A* students Nathan Kehoe from Netherton (biology, chemistry and religious studies), and Oliver McDonald from Hightown (chemistry, physics and mathematics).

Their success reflects a strong performance by the St Mary’s boys in this year’s examinations.
And while many students will pursue traditional career paths like medicine and the law in the future, some have decided on different ways forward.

Sophie Clarke from Waterloo is heading to the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London.

Sophie, who achieved four A-level passes including A* grades in music and classics, said: “I have absolutely loved it at St Mary’s. The emphasis on music has been great, and I have had fantastic opportunities to perform in concerts, musicals and drama productions.

“I’m delighted to be able to continue my studies in this field and hope to be playing lead roles in the West End one day.”

Meanwhile Daniel Frampton, who achieved three A-level passes, is set to join the Royal Marines on an officer training course at its Commando Training Centre in Devon.

Daniel said: “I wouldn’t be the person I am, or pursing this career path, if it wasn’t for the Combined Cadet Force at St Mary’s. The challenge and the responsibility have been invaluable, and I can’t wait to start my Royal Marines training.”

Commenting on this year’s exams St Mary’s Principal, Mike Kennedy, said: “These are very pleasing results which reflect the hard work and commitment of our students and staff – and the support they have received from parents – throughout their time at the school.

“It’s particularly encouraging that many students did better than their predicted grades, proof of the excellent progress young people make at St Mary’s.

“The results also reinforce the ‘excellent academic achievement and progress’ assessment we received from the Independent Schools Inspectorate earlier this year.”
