Winstanley College’s work results in record Oxbridge offers

A record twenty-three Winstanley College students have received Oxbridge offers for September 2020, 12 have offers for Cambridge University and 11 have offers for Oxford University.

This is the highest number of offers ever received by Winstanley students and is testament to the hard work put in by the students and their teachers throughout the high school to college journey.

Oxford University reports that 69% of their offers this year were to students from state schools which is a huge shift from five years ago when state school applicants received just 56% of undergraduate offers.

Louise Tipping, Winstanley College principal, said: “The increasing number of state school students being given the chance to study at these prestigious institutions is a real sign that opportunities for young people are changing for the better.

“Here at Winstanley we work closely with local high schools to promote progression to higher education and to ensure that students from postcodes with traditionally low rates of progression are given extra support and encouragement.

“It really is the joined up effort in the journey from school pupil to Winstanley student that results in so many successful university offers and in particular our record number of Oxbridge offers this year”.

Winstanley College is the North West HE+ Hub for Wigan and Warrington in partnership with Cambridge University.  The Hub offers school and college pupils workshops and talks on everything from choosing a Russell Group university to surviving an Oxbridge Interview.

Matt Fisher, who co-ordinates Winstanley College’s Oxbridge Programme said: “We’re incredibly proud that an astonishing 23 Winstanley students who came to us from 17 different high schools are realising their potential to progress to study at Oxford and Cambridge! These students have the ambition, confidence and ability to flourish at the best universities in the UK”.
