Identifying suspects

Thirty Year 9 pupils from Bebington High School were invited to Liverpool John Moores University as part of the universities ‘Chemistry for All’ programme.

The pupils took part in a day of forensic science where they tested crime scene evidence in the university science laboratory in order to identify a suspect.

The days activities included fingerprint examination, fibre and hair analysis, blood identification, flame tests to identify metals and weapon identification through cast marking. The pupils then had to make conclusions using the evidence gathered and present the findings.

Three pupils were then awarded as scientist of the year. First place was given to Mia Cartlidge, second place was awarded to Ryan Bond and third place went to Ben Clarke.

Headteacher, Ms Catherine Kelly said: “The pupils worked extremely hard all day and were an absolute credit to the school”.
