Alsop students stand together for Anti-Bullying Week

As part of National Anti-Bullying Week 2019, Alsop High School students have produced a short film about standing together against bullying. They have used this years’ theme ‘Change Starts With Us’ to speak out about the collective responsibility of both young people, teachers and parents to stand up for what they believe in.

Year seven students and their form teacher Ms Bebbington, used materials from the Anti-Bullying Alliance to create empowering, positive messages to other young people. They worked with the school media company to produce an information film, for use during assemblies in partner primary schools and across Merseyside to promote the theme ‘Small change. Big difference.’

Alsop students understand that whether it is verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well in to adulthood. They talk about working together to make small, simple changes, to break the cycle and create a safe environment for everyone. They encourage everyone to work together to challenge bullying. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in. It starts with work together.

One year 7 student said: “At Alsop we know how to be moral and we know how to be kind. Change starts here. Change starts now. Change starts with us.”

Mr Wilson, headteacher said: “This year the goal of Anti-Bullying Week is to inform schools, children and young people, parents and carers to know that it takes a collective responsibility to stop bullying.

“Bullying has no place at Alsop High School. We value and respect each other. We all recognise that we individuals with unique talents, unique skills and things we bring to the school community. We support each other, we look after each other and we keep one another safe. Bullying has no place in any school.”

Alsop staff also appear on the film. Ms Tapia-Bowes, Literacy Co-ordinator quotes one of her favourite authors, J.K.Rowling: “We stand together. We stick up for the vulnerable. We challenge the bigots. We challenge the bigots. We don’t let hate speech become normalised and we hold the line.”
