Historic double for St Margaret’s Academy

SMA’s First XI football team has secured a league and cup double this month, coming top of the league in the Bill Murphy Premier Division, before taking home the Premier Play-Offs Cup.

Sponsored by 220 Soft, the team has stormed to 15 victories this season, scoring an impressive 68 goals in 20 matches.

The team has been crowned league title winners in the Merseyside Colleges League for the third consecutive year, following NDS Trophies Championship victories in 2015 and 2016.

Following a title deciding match with Jamie Carragher Sports Academy earlier this month, the first XI team were named champions of the league having stepped up to the Bill Murphy Premier Division this season.

The second win for the team came in the Premier Play-Offs Cup final against Tranmere Rovers College, where the side sealed a 3-1 victory at Walton Hall Park.

In a memorable season of football, first XI has become the first side in the Aigburth school’s history to secure a league and cup double victory.

The historic victory comes under direction of its manager, Greg McLean, a former student of the school.

First XI manager, Greg McLean, said: “I am so proud of the players for yet another memorable season. Each and every member of the team has contributed towards this terrific achievement with their spirit, determination and will to win.

“It has been a pleasure managing such a great group of lads over the past two years. They have all shown great commitment and desire to be the best and winning three trophies in that time is testament to that. They will go down as legends of St Margaret’s and I wish them all the very best of luck as they go on to university and the world of work.”

Special mentions go to Owen Hough, scoring 32 goals in 44 matches, while Adam Derbyshire and Luke Oluyombo take the mantle for most consistent performers over two years.

Captain Iwan Webster led by example showing great leadership with 33 appearances, as his vice-captain Elliot Musa, racked up 40 appearances with 19 assists and nine goals.
