Liverpool Cathedral to welcome back visitors and worshippers

Liverpool Cathedral, the home of the Educate Awards, will open its doors once again to visitors and worshippers on 19 July. 

The day marks the 96th anniversary of its consecration and 106 years since its foundation stone was laid. 

The reopening of the historic Grade 1 listed building begins with its annual Consecration Service at 10:30 am and then will welcome visitors after 12 noon. 

While the building has remained closed, there has been a flurry of activity as staff and volunteers prepare to reopen the Cathedral’s doors and welcome people back safely for worship and visiting. 

The Dean of Liverpool, The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones said that to keep people safe the Cathedral is introducing a one-way system with advance booking while limiting the number of people allowed inside at any one time.  

The opening hours will be reduced and there will be hand sanitisers points plus new signage to direct and remind visitors of the safety measures.

She said: “We want people to enjoy our building and we want them to do this safely so, like so many great Liverpool venues, the way you encounter us will be different. But you will still encounter a warm welcome as you come back to one of the buildings that people right across Liverpool and beyond love.” 

Adding: “I have missed so many encounters with our visitors over the last few months so it feels great to be welcoming people back. And to be able to more fully open our doors with public worship on the anniversary of our consecration seems fitting and right.” 

Liverpool Cathedral closed its doors on 23 March. Since that time, it has responded to the crisis in creative and innovative ways offering a wide range of support – both practical and spiritual to the community – online and off – and has seen a growing number of people seeking prayer and worship in these uncertain times. 

From Sunday 19 July 2020, the public visiting hours will be:  

• 12 noon to 3 pm on Sundays
• 11 am to 3 pm Monday to Saturday
