Spectacular and spellbound: Halloween Lantern Carnival returns

Sefton Park will come alive with illuminated visual theatre this Halloween as the Halloween Lantern Carnival returns to Liverpool’s cultural calendar.

The annual twilight Halloween Lantern Carnival takes place on Saturday, November 1, from 6pm and will include giant puppets, kinetic floats, pyrotechnics and sculptures, all lighting up the night sky whilst making its journey through Sefton Park. The carnival is expected to attract thousands of visitors, each transported into an imaginary world of mischievous artistry and dazzling beauty.

While the story for this year’s Lantern Carnival remains a mystery, previous year’s themes have been ‘Mexican day of the Dead’, ‘The Girl in the Moon’ and ‘Ancient Circle’, each featuring impressive bonfires, glowing giant puppets and hundreds of costumed characters.

Jo Pocock, artistic director of the Halloween Lantern Carnival, says: “We are delighted to be bringing the much loved Halloween Lantern Carnival to Sefton Park again this year. The Lantern Company is now in its 12th year and the work has developed hugely over that time, taking us to many other cities and countries, however the Halloween Carnival is definitely the highlight of the year for us. We are really excited to be collaborating once again with pyrotechnics company, And Now, to create a spectacular finale to the event.

“With our roots firmly placed in the city and with the continued support of Liverpool City Council, Arts Council England and many other supporters who believe in superb cultural events for all, we are committed to developing great art in the local community.”

The Lantern Company is hosting community-led creative workshops before the event, helping local people to create their own hand-made lanterns. These workshops have proved hugely popular and are now sold out. Local secondary school, Gateacre, is one member of the local community getting involved and hosting workshops ahead of the carnival
