Liverpool Hope University host Glass Poetry event

This morning, Liverpool Hope University are hosting a Glass Poetry event, organised by the English Department and the student English society.

Current and former students, staff and members of the public are invited to share their favourite poems by writing them on the windows of the University’s Gateway building. Chalk pens will be used to write entire poems, short quotes or select verses on the large glass windows, showcasing the different inspirational quotations for all to see.

The event aims to start conversations about how poetry can influence people’s everyday lives and how we can integrate poetry in to our daily routines. Those lacking inspiration can be helped by the university’s staff and students, they will be on hand to provide different sources, examples of poetry and different books to inspire passers-by. Participants are also encouraged to read their quotations out loud before putting pen to window.

Dr. Alice Bennett, from Liverpool Hope University’s English Department said: “Poetry permeates our lives, even if we don’t realise – from the first rhymes we learn at school, to weddings and funerals, and national and international events. It is used in advertising, and even in sport.

“The Glass Poetry event is an opportunity for people to help create a visible patchwork of the poetry that means something to them. We are really looking forward to finding out what people choose, or if certain poems or quotations have a resonance with more than one person.”

The event is held at Liverpool Hope University’s Gateway building until 1pm today.
