National Storytelling Week in Southport

Children at Bishop David Sheppard Primary School, Southport were treated to a visit by a famous children’s author, Stuart Reid.

Mrs Jemma Clarke, English subject leader, said: “They loved hearing about how he wrote his stories, including Gorgeous George and the Giant Geriatric Generator and Gorgeous George & the Zigzag Zit-Faced Zombies. Everyone was so excited to meet a real author!

“Stuart’s books are written to encourage children, especially boys, to want to read more often. They are funny, imaginative and engage even the most reluctant of readers, yet with a stretching vocabulary that suits more developed children.

“Stuart treated the pupils to an interesting workshop, which focused on the joys of reading and how brilliant books can be. It inspired them to read for pleasure. It encouraged their creativity and they were keen to write their own stories, using descriptive language as they stretched their imagination.

“It was a fabulous presentation! Stuart had the children enthralled and excited about reading for fun – wonderful!”

The children also had the opportunity to buy Stuart’s books and have them signed by the author.
